Dr. Romula Orque-Tatlonghari, lovingly known as “Rollie,” passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2026, at the age of 92. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy defined not only by her accomplishments in medicine, but by her compassion, resilience, and deep devotion to her family.
Born on October 5, 1933, in Manila, Philippines, Romula was the cherished daughter of Pascual and Petra Orque. From a young age, she showed a quiet determination and a heart for serving others—qualities that would guide her throughout her life. She earned her medical degree from Manila Central University in 1958, setting the foundation for a lifelong calling in healing and care.
In 1959, Romula began a courageous new chapter, immigrating to the United States to pursue her medical career. Her journey took her through New York and West Virginia as she completed her internship and residencies, steadily building her expertise while navigating the challenges of a new country. It was during her residency in New York that she met the love of her life, Dr. Diosdado Tatlonghari. Their partnership was rooted in shared purpose, faith, and a deep commitment to both family and medicine.
Together, they built a home in Scarsdale, New York, where they raised their four children. In 1978, guided by a strong sense of mission, Romula and Diosdado made the selfless decision to move to Perham, Minnesota, to serve a rural community in need. There, Romula became a true pioneer, breaking barriers as the first female physician in Otter Tail County. Her presence brought not only much-needed medical care, but also inspiration for women who would follow in her path.
In 1981, she proudly became a naturalized citizen of the United States, embracing her new home while remaining deeply connected to her Filipino roots.
Life took an unexpectedly difficult turn in August 1982 with the passing of her beloved husband. With strength and grace, Romula carried forward, returning to Scarsdale in 1983 to continue raising her family and serving patients. She went on to dedicate many more years to caring for others at institutions including Lincoln Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian, and the Hebrew Home for the Aged in the Bronx.
Dr. Orque-Tatlonghari’s career spanned decades, marked by tireless dedication, quiet humility, and a genuine compassion for every patient she encountered. She practiced medicine well into her later years, retiring at the age of 80 in 2014—a testament to her enduring commitment to her calling.
While her professional accomplishments were many, those who knew her best will remember her most as a devoted mother, a proud and loving “Lola,” and a steady, caring presence in the lives of her family and friends. She found great joy in her children and grandchildren, and her love for them was at the center of everything she did.
She is survived by her four children: Portia Tatlonghari; Wendy Burg (Roger); Eric Tatlonghari (Regina); and Roy Tatlonghari (Ellen); and her seven beloved grandchildren: Patrick, Liam, Zoe, Wyatt, Owen, Cecilia, and Andrew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Diosdado Tatlonghari, and her siblings Felicidad (“Fely”), Ardientes (“Nene”), Erhlinda (“Linda”), and Antonio (“Boy”).
Romula’s life was one of purpose, perseverance, and love. She touched countless lives—through her healing hands, her quiet strength, and her unwavering care for others. Her legacy will live on in the many lives she shaped and in the family she cherished so deeply.
A private funeral and interment will be held July 20, 2026, for immediate family only. A celebration of her life will take place on October 3, 2026. Details will be provided.
