Michael R. O'Neill

Michael R. O’Neill, cherished husband, father, son, brother and uncle passed away suddenly on August 8, 2026. He was born July 10, 1977, as he often referred to as "the greatest day in the history of the world". He has left an irreplaceable hole in the hearts of all who knew, cherished and loved him. 

Michael’s journey began in the warmth of a devoted family, whose steadfast love would become his north star. He was the beloved son of Michael and Kathleen O’Neill, and the cherished brother of Erin O'Neill Miller and brother-in-law Kere Miller. Michael grew up enveloped by laughter, guidance, and familial bonds that remained resilient and true throughout his years.

Michael met the love of his life and best friend, Katharine, while in grade school at St. Jude.  After college, Michael asked Katie out and from that point on, they were inseparable.  They married in 2005 and built a home that was vibrant with love and openheartedness and filled with kids, dogs and friends. Together, they welcomed three beautiful children: John “Jack,” Anne “Annie,” and Grace. Through every milestone in their lives, Michael was a steady, loving presence—cheering them on, showing up, and illustrating what it means to love without measure. To his children, he gave the gifts of encouragement, warmth, and enduring belief in their individual paths.

Michael’s family were the cornerstone of his life. He was a treasured son-in-law to Kerry and Debbie Heller, a supportive brother-in-law to Amanda and Stephen Flavell and the greatest supporter to his niece, Molly, and nephews—Brennen, Reed, Rylan and Charlie, for the daily phone calls, cheering on the sidelines and always steadfast in his love for them. Family gatherings resounded with his laughter, generosity, and a knack for making every person feel uniquely significant.

Michael was a devoted and loyal friend. Whether he met you 45 years ago at St. Jude or last week, he was your friend for life. He formed relationships in everything he did whether it was in school, playing sports, coaching the kid's CYO teams or at a St. Gen's, La Salle or Merion Mercy event, friendships were made. His impact even extended to the kids he coached and especially Jack, Annie and Grace's friends. He was a mentor, cheerleader and father figure to so many. Once you met Michael, he was your friend for life.

Sports were a pivotal part of Michael's life from an early age, especially football and field events, from his early days playing for the Romans, La Salle and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). He was an all star many times and a 5 time All-Catholic. He finished his sports career as the captain of IUP's football team, leading them to the National Final Four his senior year. When his playing days were over, you could find him hosting ND football parties and taking the stats for Villanova basketball games. But nothing brought more joy to Moose than watching Jack, Annie, Grace and his niece and nephews on the field. He was their biggest cheerleader!

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, friends and family will gather at La Salle College High School, 8605 W Cheltenham Ave, Wyndmoor, PA 19038, to honor Michael’s life and legacy. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., providing a time to share memories and comfort one another. Directly following, a Mass in remembrance will begin at 11:00 a.m.

Even as we wrestle with the sharpness of his loss, we hold fast to Michael’s spirit, which so clearly touched all of us. In our sorrow, we discover gratitude—for every day shared with him, for the love he gave so freely, and for the imprint he leaves in the lives of his beloved family and friends. Michael's presence endures through stories, traditions, and, above all, the kindness he inspired. 

There will never be another Moose O'Neill.
