Michael Patrick Daly passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, surrounded by friends and family, leaving behind a legacy defined by a devotion to his family.
Born on August 7, 1952, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Michael was raised by his parents, Frances (Schell) and Thomas Daly. He grew up in Germantown, Philadelphia, and was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish along with his siblings: Mary Kay (Ken Murray), Bill (Marie), Thomas (Patti), Eileen (Michael O’Donnell), and Stephen (Holly). He spent his childhood afternoons at the Germantown Boys Club and his summers with his family in Ocean City, New Jersey.
He attended St. Francis of Assisi grade school and graduated from LaSalle College High School in 1970. Michael went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from LaSalle College in 1974 and eventually went on to earn an M.A. from Georgetown University and his Ph.D. in Economics from Temple University in 1980. Michael’s career began in research and academia before eventually pivoting to a long and successful career in financial risk management for large banks and insurance companies.
Shortly after graduate school Michael married the love of his life, Kathleen (Devaney) in 1981. Michael was the proud father of Dennis (Jennifer), Bridget (Michael West), and Maureen. In 1985 Michael and Kathleen moved to West Hartford, Connecticut where they raised their family. In 2014 Michael and Kathleen moved back to Philadelphia to be closer to their children and growing family. Michael was lovingly known as “Gramps” to his five grandchildren: Nora (5), Finnian (5), Maeve (3), Mary (3), and Catherine (1).
In addition to his academic and professional endeavors, Michael was also a talented cook and gracious host who enjoyed making Italian cuisine or grilling for friends and family. The doors at Lemay Street and Shawnee Street were always open and he was often found in the kitchen on the weekend hosting homemade pizza nights or mixed grill, a tradition that has passed along to his children.
Michael enjoyed spending his retirement in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. His days were filled with walks on the beach, body surfing, reading, golf, bike rides, and playing tennis. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren fall in love with the beach he learned to love as a child.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 13, 2025, St. Genevieve Parish, 1225 Bethlehem Pike, Flourtown, PA, where relatives and friends will be received from 9:00 AM until 9:45 AM.
