Joseph Maguire, Exceptional Chef and Loving Son, Dies at 59.
A family restaurant first ignited Joe’s drive for culinary mastery. And while his brother-in-law noted that initially “he stunk,” that sentiment did not last long. Soon Joe established himself throughout the Philadelphia area as an innovative and superb chef. His exquisite pâtés, soups, and sauces delighted the tastebuds and will be sorely missed.
Outside of the kitchen, he enjoyed nature, art, and Philadelphia sports. Unlike so many, he did not need witnesses to validate his passions. He happily lugged his kayak to Nockamixon State Park solo, wandered museums alone, and yelled at the Eagles in the privacy of his apartment. But his comfort with himself did not prevent him from enjoying others or sharing his passions. He often spent evenings participating in boisterous Trivial Pursuit games, sharing meals, and cheering on the Sixers.
Finally, and foremost, Joe was a family man. Demonstrating his love and patience, he frequently took his mother on escapades to visit parks, museums, and restaurants. He introduced his nieces and nephews to science fiction, video games, kick-the-can, and Philly fandom. As for his siblings, he was an emotional rock and constant calm. Animals were drawn to Joe’s loving spirit. He had a special bond with his beloved cat Jack and his dog-nephew Jameson.
In short, he was a good man. And with that legacy we will continue to remember and love him.
Joseph is survived by his mother: Mary Kathleen Maguire nee Murphy, son of deceased Joseph V. Maguire Jr. Joe is also survived by beloved siblings Maureen Waxler (Peter), Barbara Maguire-Sloss, Matthew Maguire (Donna), and Kate Garrison (Jim) and many loving nieces and nephews.
